Lighting is one of the most important elements to consider when designing your home. While it may not be as noticeable as the colour scheme or furniture in the room, without the right lighting, you will never be able to achieve the effect that you are hoping for.
First, look at the direction the room faces. How much natural light does the room receive at different times of the day and what is the overall warmth and intensity of this light. The position of the windows will determine the way in which natural light will stream into the room. Try to make good use of natural light by arranging the furniture in the room in such a way that it takes advantage of it.
Lighting a room will also depend on the practical activities that the room is used for. In kitchens & bathrooms, the lighting needs to be bright, directed and cool. Further to the overall lighting in these rooms, additional light may be required to be placed strategically in specific working areas. For example, a kitchen will need task lights to cast directly onto where you are working, while in the bathroom, the mirror over the sink needs to be brightly lit.
On the other hand, for rooms that are used primarily for leisure activities like entertaining and watching TV, you will only need ambient lighting or mood lighting that will cast a nice gentle background glow. The effect here will be both intimate and flattering and inevitably create a cosy atmosphere.
